Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of the arts and her creative side. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art, as well as theatre. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate through the medium of art. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. When she was a student DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage in the house of one on the jury. In the course of her work, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the public relations industry. DuVernay got a job right out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
